Tummy Tuck: Three Common Myths By Michael A. Devlin, MD on October 04, 2015

Despite being one the most popular cosmetic procedures Devlin Cosmetic Surgery, there are still many people who avoid an Abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck as it is commonly known because of a few very common myths.

Here are the top three Tummy Tuck myths:

Myth: A Tummy Tuck is a great way to lose weight

The results of a tummy tuck are immediately noticed right after surgery.  This usually motivated patients to lead a healthier lifestyle.  However, a tummy tuck is not meant to be a weight loss strategy. Abdominoplasty changes your stomach’s appearance through the removal of excess skin and the tightening of weak muscles.

In fact, your weight must be stable before a tummy tuck is recommended.A tummy tuck is a body contouring treatment not to help you lose weight, but rather to help smooth your body and remove unwanted flab and excess skin. No diet or exercise can get rid of the hanging skin or tissue. So despite what many people may think, tummy tucks are actually designed for healthy people already at or close to their ideal weight.

Myth: Recovering From a Tummy Tuck is long and Painful

There are many individuals that are under the belief that a tummy tuck will have a long and painful recovery. Yet, this is actually far from the truth, and recovering from this procedure can be done relatively quickly. Dr Devlin utilizes a pain pump that he inserts during the surgery.  This allows you to get up and walk the same day as your procedure.

Typically, most people will take a week off from work however; full activity (such as working out) will need to be stop for six weeks. The first couple of days after your procedure you will likely have the most discomfort. Most pain is easily managed with the pain pump as well as pain medication that is prescribed for you. After this you will be amazed with how much better you feel each day.

Myth: Only women undergo a Tummy Tuck.

This is simply not true! Even men can undergo an abdominoplasty surgery, especially if he has lost so much of weight that he is left with saggy and droopy skin and stubborn fat. Like a woman, a man is considered a good candidate for a tummy tuck if he is healthy, has a stable weight and is a non-smoker. Women do undergo abdominoplasty far more frequently than men, but according to the ASPS (American Academy of Plastic Surgeon) statistical report, there was a 4% increase in men who had a tummy tuck procedure performed in 2014. Men want to look their best too and sometimes diet and exercise don’t cut it.  Don’t ignore the tummy tuck option if you’re frustrated with the appearance of your abdomen, whether you’re male or female.

A tummy tuck is an excellent procedure for people who have under gone weight loss or a pregnancy.  At Devlin Cosmetic Surgery we have yet to hear a patient say, “I wish I had not had the surgery done”. This is because the results are typically dramatic and life changing.  Don’t let the fear of the unknown scare you.  Our office is happy to answer any questions you have about abdominoplasty or any other surgery that Dr. Michael Devlin performs. As always, education is one of the keys to a successful outcome.
