Gynecomastia Surgery in Little Rock, Arkansas By Michael A. Devlin, MD on March 29, 2016

According to newly released data today from ASPS statistics, male cosmetic surgery procedures rose by 25% in 2015.  This is the largest single increase in numbers in any given year. Dr. Michael Devlin, a cosmetic surgeon in Little Rock, Arkansas, agrees with the validity of this percentage and in his own practice has seen over a 40% increase in men requesting procedures such as facelifts, neck lifts, liposuction, as well as nonsurgical treatments such as, Kybella and Botox.  The single most performed surgery on men is Gynecomastia, also known as, male breast reduction.

Signs and Symptoms of Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia cannot be confirmed with a blood test. It is diagnosed through clinical evaluation. The classic sign of gynecomastia is breast enlargement with firm glandular tissue under the areola (nipple). Sometimes the first symptoms of gynecomastia include increased sensitivity, itchiness with increased diameter of the areola.  Often time patients describe having a “puffy nipple”.

The breasts may also develop tenderness later in the course of the condition. Although most patients may not even know that they have Gynecomastia since the condition may not cause any symptoms at all. Many times it is the source of great anxiety. Men may often be labeled as have having “man boobs” and suffer silently.  Many times, these men have not taken off their shirt in public for years and often resort to wearing two shirts just help camouflage their problem.

The bottom line is that gynecomastia is all about perception. If you perceive that you have it, you certainly will behave like you have it and you will suffer for it.

Gynecomastia Surgery Treatment Options

The gold standard treatment for gynecomastia is surgery. Hormone replacement and prescription medications, either over the counter or from the Internet, will not effectively treat male breasts. Self treatment with diet and exercise will not cure your gynecomastia, because it is actual breast tissue and not fat.

Every patient is different when performing male breast reduction surgery. However, the primary focus is the same, which is reduction of volume in the chest area. Surgical treatment of gynecomastia requires great skill and artistry.

Dr. Michael Devlin has extensive training and knowledge to provide you with the results you desire.

The procedure usually involves a combination of liposuction and tissue removal. The skin retracts impressively well after the removal of excessive chest tissue, even in patients who actually have saggy skin, which makes the need for skin removal uncommon.

Dr. Michael Devlin states, “One great thing about treating a high volume of patients over the years is that I can at least judge my own success, and I am known to be very critical of my work. I want every patient to be absolutely 100% happy. But I also know better than that. I know that surgery is the only proven treatment for gynecomastia and that, over all, most patients are a lot better off than with no treatment’.

If you are a male concerned with appearance of your chest know that you are not alone. There are many men that suffer from the same condition as you.
