Gynecomastia Surgeons in Little Rock, AR

An increasing number of men who want to eliminate the appearance of excess breast tissue are seeking Gynecomastia surgery  or Male Breast Reduction Surgery in Little Rock, AR with Dr. Michael Devlin. Physical appearance and competing in the workplace are cited as two of the most common reasons for men choosing cosmetic surgery for aesthetic enhancement. Gynecomastia surgery is one of the most common male plastic surgery procedures that Dr. Devlin performs, increasing by 30% from 2015.

Because Dr. Michael Devlin is well known for his extensive treatment for men with Gynecomastia in Arkansas, here are the most common questions Dr. Devin is asked regarding Gynecomastia Surgery or Male Breast Reduction Surgery.

What kind of scar should I expect?

Usually periareolar (about 1 inch scar in the lower part of the areola) that is generally inconspicuous. Sometimes, tiny scars remain in the armpit or chest after liposuction. Some people need more extensive procedures, which may require a longer scar.  The location of the incisions will be discussed with you at your consultation and again at your pre-operative appointment.

Will I have pain that will require medication?

Usually pain is minimal, but since we want to make sure you will be comfortable, we do provide you with a prescription for pain medication.

How much time should I take off from work or school?

This depends on the type of work you do and the extent of the surgical procedure. Usually it is about three days. Healing time varies for each individual.  Dr. Devlin will discuss your individual circumstances and advise you on how long you should be avoiding certain activities.

What are the most common complications after male breast reduction surgery?

Gynecomastia surgery is very safe surgery. However, as with any surgery, complications can happen. Fortunately, the possible complications are treatable.

Two of the more common complications are:

  • Bleeding/ Seroma: Rarely after a surgery, a blood vessel may open up and bleed- this is called a hematoma. This may happen within hours, days, or even a week or two afterwards.  A seroma is a collection of clear, yellowish fluid, which may also occur after surgery. This can usually be avoided with wearing the compression vest and limiting your activity until Dr. Devlin releases you to do more. If a seroma does develop it is typically treated by syringe aspiration.
  • Irregular contours: Irregular contours sometime improve spontaneously but may require revision surgery.

Can the size of areolas be reduced?

In the majority of cases, the chest skin will spontaneously tighten after the excessive tissue beneath (breast and/or fat) has been removed in the course of surgery. Since the nipple/areola is also a skin structure, it too will tighten and diminish in size. In rare cases, when the areola is extremely large, surgery can be performed to reduce it to a more appropriate size.
