However, additional types of surgery may be appropriate. The desire for a youthful flat, toned t and smooth stomach is common, but so is confusion about the best way to achieve it. Little Rock Cosmetic Surgeon Dr. Michael Devlin discusses your Tummy Tuck Surgery  options

Tummy Tuck

If your abdominal muscles have been stretched either by childbirth or weight gain, often the only option to tighten and flatten the stomach is with a tummy tuck. Exercises such as abdominal crunches or sit ups can not repair the separation in the muscles. In addition, loose skin rarely contracts back after weight loss. The best option often is surgical removal of the excess skin and tightening of the abdominal muscles with a tummy tuck surgery or abdominoplasty.

Liposuction

Liposuction removes fat from your body using suction. During liposuction, small, thin, blunt-tipped tubes (cannula) are inserted through tiny incisions in the skin. Fat is suctioned out through these small canulas. Liposuction is an excellent choice when excess skin or muscle separation is not an issue. Liposuction is considered a "body Contouring" procedure and not a weight loss procedure

One of the most common misconceptions is that liposuction or tummy tucks are weight-loss procedures. Neither procedure is a weight loss tool. They are only body-contouring tools.  Ideally patients should lose whatever weight they want to lose before the procedure, because weight loss or weight gain after the procedure could harm the results. Weight loss after a tummy tuck may create loose skin—the main problem tummy tucks are supposed to solve.  Additionally, liposuction cannot eliminate stretch marks and cellulite from the skin. The treatment can only remove small, localized concentrations of fat. In most cases, ten pounds of fat or less will be removed from the treated area

Weight Loss Surgery

All too often patients present for a consultation for a tummy tuck or liposuction requesting that we remove "all of their fat" They are confused about the difference between body contouring procedures and weight loss surgery procedures. Often morbidly obese, these patients mistakenly believe that liposuction or a tummy tuck is a solution to their obesity. We try our best to educate these patients about the difference and often refer the to a bariatric surgeon for a lap band, gastric sleeve, gastric balloon or even a gastric bypass. Once the have lost the necessary weight, then we can address the cosmetic concerns of excess skin.Dr. Michael Devlin prefers your BMI to be less than 30 to 35 for optimal results.
