Hand Rejuvenation By Michael A. Devlin, MD on July 26, 2018

Many of us are very careful about our skin these days. We have been told over and over about the importance of sunscreen. We buy all kinds of products to defend against the harmful effects of the sun and to help us age gracefully. But we tend to forget about one important body part that ages us, our hands.

It’s easy to forget to take the same care of our hands, at least until we start to notice the changes caused by years of sun exposure and aging. Sun exposure causes the same damage to the skin on the back of our hands as it does elsewhere—causing brown spots and changes in texture.

Just as aging takes it toll on our face, it also takes its toll on our hands very much the same way. Because of the loss of fat, veins can become more prominent. Skin becomes stretchy and does not bounce back very quickly.

Even young women may experience dissatisfaction with the appearance of their hands. This can be due to having a very slender frame with little fat underlying the skin to start with. Genetics can also play a role—if your mother or grandmother developed prominent veins and thin skin early on, chances are you might as well. Even beautiful Hollywood elite face the issue.

The good news is Dr. Michael Devlin can help you achieve the results you desire without surgery. The same treatments that reverse the damage of sun and time on your face are also excellent for restoring a youthful and beautiful look to your hands.

Filler

Restylane and Juvéderm are always good choices for replacing lost volume in the hands but for the longest lasting product Scluptra is often recommended. Scluptra helps stimulate your skin’s own natural collagen production to help restore its inner structure and increase volume that has been lost to aging.

Fat transfer

Dr. Devlin can “harvest “fat from places you don’t want it and inject it where you do—under the skin of your upper hands. Because you are using your own fat cells, it’s a natural solution. Fat transfer works to “plump” the area just like fillers with a big difference…50% of what is injected is permanent! Making fat transfer a great option for people that don’t want to come back for maintenance.

Laser Resurfacing

As with your face and neck, laser skin resurfacing done to the hands can provide you with dramatic results. Laser resurfacing can eliminate brown spots, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and tighten the skin. Dr. Devlin uses a Co2 laser that takes less than 10 minutes

Most of these procedures require minimal downtime, with bruising and mild swelling as the most common side effects.
