What to Expect During Your Labiaplasty Consultation By Michael A. Devlin, MD on September 18, 2018

So, you want to talk about an often-embarrassing topic, your vagina? You may be surprised to hear that you aren’t alone. According to the ASPS(American Society of Plastic Surgeon’s) Labiaplasty surgery and non-surgical vaginal laser treatments have soared in popularity by 39% over the last year. No longer considered the “designer vagina”, Labiaplasty can help improve self-esteem and confidence in intimate situations, as well as in social settings, such as a gym or at the pool. We understand that the vagina can be a very sensitive area to discuss. Our goal is to make you as comfortable as possible during your consultation, surgery and beyond.

Your Consultation

What's Normal

The first thing that Dr. Devlin will tell you is that your vagina and labia are not abnormal. They are part of your anatomy and will fall within the spectrum of ‘normal’ that Dr. Devlin sees on a regular basis. Some women are born with large, thick or irregular labia. Others may develop large labia after giving birth or after menopause. Just because you may not like the look of them, or they may be causing you discomfort, does not make them abnormal or anything to be ashamed of. The key point to focus on is that, if it bothers you, Dr. Devlin can discuss ways in which something can be done to help.

Examination

Because there are many variations of normal, Dr. Devlin will customize the procedure to meet your individual needs. The labia can be reshaped by trimming or by the wedge technique. To see which procedure would be the most effective, Dr. Devlin will need to examine your genitals. Much like a gynecological exam, you will need to remove your clothes from the waist down and you will be placed in stirrups. Since there is no normal when it comes to this area, Dr. Devlin’s primary goal will be to correct what is bothering you. A nurse will be present in the room with you to help ease your anxiety.

Non-Surgical Treatments

Labiaplasty can be easily combined with vaginal laser treatments for a more dramatic affect.  If you are experiencing symptoms such as urinary incontinence, vaginal looseness (due to childbirth or age) or vaginal dryness, RejuVAnate treatments can help alleviate the most common issues associated with the vagina and bladder. During your consultation you will be asked about symptoms you may be experiencing to determine your personal treatment plan.

Before and After Pictures

Reviewing before and after pictures of labiaplasties can help you become more informed of what can be achieved through surgery and the various techniques used. Before choosing a labiaplasty surgeon be sure to ask to see their before and after gallery to evaluate the surgeon’s aesthetic approach. You will find that Dr. Devlin has the largest before and after photos of any surgeon in Arkansas.

Recovery

How you ultimately heal from your Labiaplasty surgery will depend on how well you follow Dr. Devlin’s post-operative instructions. You will be given detailed instructions on what to do before your surgery, the day of your surgery, as well as what to expect during your recovery process. As with any surgical procedure there are common risks and complications associated with it.  These risks will be reviewed thoroughly with you during your pre-operative appointment prior to your surgery. You will be given signs to watch for that are not normal and as always, our staff will be available to answer questions or concerns 24/7 throughout your healing period.
