Benefits of Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery (also known as blepharoplasty) is often performed by addressing either the upper or lower eyelids, or both. Blepharoplasty can correct:

  • Puffy eyelids
  • Drooping skin above the eyes
  • Under-eye bags
  • Hooded lids
  • Muscle laxity

In addition to contributing to an aged appearance, heavy, hooded eyelids may also obstruct vision. Blepharoplasty can remove excess skin and fat from the upper eyelids to improve your field of vision.

Eyelid Surgery Procedure

Some patients prefer to have upper or lower eyelid surgery performed individually, and some choose to combine the two. Each procedure targets different areas of the eye, so depending on your concerns, Dr. Devlin recommend a technique to help you reach your cosmetic goals.

Upper Eyelid Surgery

Upper blepharoplasty begins with Dr. Devlin creating incisions in the natural creases of your eyelid. At this time, droopy or heavy eyelids are addressed by excising fat deposits and excess skin, as well as repositioning the muscles or tissues if necessary. Fine sutures are used to close the incisions.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

Lower blepharoplasty is performed by creating an incision below the lower lash line. Excess skin and fat are removed from the lower eyelid, correcting puffiness and bags. Sometimes lower eyelid surgery can be performed from the inside of the eye, thereby completely eliminating visible scarring.

Recovery

While it may seem that operating on a very sensitive area of the body will require a significant amount of downtime, this is not necessarily the case. Most patients report that recovery is quick and easy. The next few days immediately following your Little Rock blepharoplasty surgery, you will need to sleep with your head elevated. Typically Dr. Devlin's patients return to work after about 1 week and can resume normal activities after about 3 weeks. Wearing protective sunglasses outside can help speed up recovery and minimize damage to the eye area due to sun exposure.
