Do you want to fade sun spots that occurred this summer?

Do you suffer from acne scars, age spots, fine lines and wrinkles? What about sun-damaged skin, irregular pigmentation, or freckles?

If so, you’re in luck, Fall is the best season is the best the time to consider a chemical peel, which can help peel away all these imperfections. Fall and winter are considered to be the best times for skin resurfacing, because people in general, are not out in the sun as much. The daytime sunlight is shorter and not as hot.  After a skin resurfacing procedure it is best to limit your time outdoors. This is due to the “new” skin that results from the peel.  It is always important to protect this new skin by wearing sunscreen and hats as needed when going outside for long periods.

What is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is a treatment that improves the texture of the skin using a chemical solution.

Chemical peels work on wrinkles by peeling away the outer layers of skin, which stimulates the growth of new skin underneath. This process can lead to improved skin tone and smoothing out of fine lines and wrinkles.  The process also helps to tighten the skin, which helps in having a refreshed look.

During the treatment, Dr. Devlin applies a solution to the skin that causes it to “blister” like a sunburn and eventually peel off. The new, regenerated skin is smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin. Although most chemical peels are used on the face, they can also be used to improve the skin on the neck, chest and hands.

What Problems Can a Chemical Peel Treat?

A chemical peel is often used to treat fine lines under the eyes and around the mouth. Wrinkles caused by sun damage, aging and hereditary factors can often be reduced or even eliminated with this procedure.

In addition, pigmentation of the skin in the form of sun spots, age spots, freckles,as well as skin that is dull in texture and color may be improved with chemical peeling.

What to Expect After Treatment?

Chemical peels come in various strengths. Dr. Devlin will suggest the most appropriate peel strength based upon your skin tone. In general there are three different types:

  1. A light peel removes the outer layer of skin. The skin will may be pink the following day but return to normal the following day.
  2. Medium peel-usually will result in some redness and skin flaking for 5-7 days.
  3. Deep peel-is just as it implies. This is the most intense peel with the greatest downtime.  Recovery takes approximately five days.  The skin will turn very dark and peel off.  The results of the deep peel are dramatic and last for a longer amount of time.
