Post-Bariatric Body Treatment Plan: Part One By Michael A. Devlin, MD on February 09, 2015

Dramatic weight loss is a huge accomplishment that anyone should be proud of.

However, this weight loss produces excess sagging skin in areas such as the face, stomach, arms, breasts and thighs. I have yet to meet a patient who is not encouraged by their massive weight loss, after all, health is improved and it is easier to exercise.

Most people feel surprised when they end up depressed with their new body. It is often still difficult to find clothes that fit properly.

Pants are usually bigger for left over skin of the stomach to fit in. Shirts may be purchased bigger to fit around the sagging skin of the arms and breasts.

The full benefits of post-bariatric surgery may not be fully visualized without skin removal surgery which includes the following:

I always start by asking you what bother YOU the most. Sometimes, patients will say they desire a flatter more contoured stomach, while others say that the weight loss has created sagging breasts that would like full again. The starting point for prioritizing an individualized treatment plan is determining what you what goals you would like to achieve. Unlike your bariatric surgery, which was ONE surgery with ONE healing period, excess skin removal will most likely be staged in multiple procedures.  This is for your safety. I ask that you make a list in order of what concerns you so that I can address them accordingly.

I understand substantial weight loss is a victory whether it’s achieved through diet and exercise alone or with bariatric surgery. I hand selected my caring and compassionate staff, so that as a team we can support you through the initial consultation process. After completion of surgery, celebrate with you.  By offering post-bariatric body contouring procedures, I hope to assist patients in leading healthier happier lives in not only body but mind and spirit as well.
