What is Arnica? By Michael A. Devlin, MD on February 27, 2015

Bruising and swelling are a natural occurrence after most types of surgery.  Here at Devlin Cosmetic Surgery we always inform all of our patients about this potential prior to the procedure.

The amount of bruising you will have will vary from person to person and also depends on what procedure you may be having.  We understand that healing and recovery is very important you and it is important to us as well.

This is why we recommend Arnica tablets prior to surgery and Arnicare gel post-operatively.

Arnica is a natural herb and has been used since the 1500’s for medicinal purposes.  It has become one of the most widely used homeopathic remedies around the world.

Arnica is also used to speed the healing process for patients recovering from surgery.  According to peacfulmountain.com and a Webmd study, patients that were placed on an arnica regimen pre and post-operatively had swelling and bruising for a lesser amount of time than those that were not on a regimen.  For this reason we choose to have our patients begin taking arnica tablets two days before your surgery.

You can purchase Arnica and Arnicare here in our office.  If you prefer it is also available over the counter at most pharmacies.
