Many women who are considering breast augmentation are confused by the way their new size will be determined. The patient may come to my office after having browsed through hundreds of before and after photos

Patients usually come in with a preconceived idea of how they would like their breasts to look.  This can be good and bad.  What I mean by this is that I believe that every patient should do a fair amount of research.

Regarding breast augmentation, a patient should have an idea of how large they would like to be.  However, I always try to explain that surgery isn’t a magic eraser.  I cannot change the nipple or breast position with breast augmentation alone.  A breast augmentation will give you a larger version of the breast you have now.  To address other issues, such as sagging or large areola, additional surgeries may be required.

I spend a fair amount of time talking with the patient about their expectations. Most women will give me a specific cup size that they would like to be. With bra sizes varying so much from style to style, it is nearly impossible to relate implant size (measured by volume in cc’s) directly with bra cup size, but I can usually get pretty close. There are many factors that go into what implant size is the best, and obviously, this will vary from patient to patient. For example, implants that are too wide and cross the axcillary line(armpit), tend to make a person look top heavy. Therefore, size does matter.

Sometimes patients bring photos of women whose breasts they like, clothed and unclothed, which helps give the me an idea of what the patient likes. Then I will take several different measurements: rib cage, nipple location and the base width of the breasts are just a few. Using these measurements, as a guideline, I get an idea of which size range and profile that will best fit their frame. Finally, the fun part begins when we actually get to try on sample sizes in a bra and shirt to get of an idea of the final look. Because I spend so much time with each patient, most are extremely happy with their ultimate decision.  The others typically say they wished they had gone just a “little bit bigger”, so I always advise that when in doubt, chose the larger one.
