The truth is that many women actually have breasts that are not exactly the same size. Actually about one fourth of adult women will have a visible difference in the size of one breast to the other. This is perfectly natural and completely treatable. However, most women do not talk about this. A new study by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons finds that differences in breast size have a significant mental health impact in adolescent girls. Researchers discovered breast asymmetry affects self-esteem, emotional well-being, and social functioning.

It is very common for a woman to have breasts that are different in size or shape, and many times, it is unnoticeable and does not require treatment. However, some women experience breasts that are significantly different either in shape, size or position. For some, this can even make it difficult to find properly fitting bras and clothing.  Summer months can be especially troublesome for women with breast asymmetry and they often will shy away from wearing swimsuits. At Devlin Cosmetic Surgery we want you to know that you are not alone. Breast asymmetry is a common condition that can be treated in several of different ways.

Breast Augmentation

A common reason for women considering breast implants is to correct problems with moderate to severe breast asymmetry. By using customized breast implants, Dr. Michael Devlin can achieve a more balanced breast size.

Asymmetric breast augmentation, which uses two different size implants, can be used to balance the breasts. A breast augmentation can be performed on either one or both breasts based on the patient’s condition and desired outcome. It is normal for a woman to receive two differently sized implants during a breast augmentation surgery in order to and arrive at identical sizes.

Breast Lift

Women struggling with cases of breast asymmetry also may have one breast that is higher than the other or one that points downward. In these situations, a breast lift can be performed to achieve a more symmetrical positioning.A one-sided lift or a combination of breast lift and breast augmentation may be required for some women.

Breast Reduction

Sometimes a breast reduction is needed to re-size the larger breast. It is very normal for one breast to grow quite larger than the other requiring a reduction surgery to regain a more symmetrical appearance. If both breast are large then both breast can be reduced to regain symmetry.
