Breast Lift and Breast Augmentation in Little Rock, At by Dr. Michael Devlin photo

What is a breast lift procedure?

A breast lift is also known as a mastopexy, It involves repositioning the nipple-areolar complex and removes excess skin reshaping the breast in a more aesthetically pleasing and higher position.

Can breast lift and breast augmentation procedures be performed on the same surgery?

Yes, I frequently perform breast augmentation combined with a breast lift.  However, there will be times will I will suggest to stage the two procedures for better results.

Why should I consider a breast augmentation with lift?

Breast augmentation will not correct sagging breasts, and a breast lift alone will not increase the size of the breast.  A breast lift combined with breast augmentation can create firmness, correct the position and shape, and add volume, without the need for multiple recovery periods.  A breast augmentation with lift is a good choice for women who have breasts that have deflated after pregnancy or massive weight loss.

How long will I need to be off work after having breast lift surgery?

Depending on the amount of skin removed, most women are back at work after breast lift surgery anywhere from 5 days to 10 days. The wide range is dependent more on what type of work the patient needs to be able to do. Heavy lifting requires two weeks. Sedentary work requires only 4-5 days.

Should I wait until I have finished having children to get a breast lift?

If you plan on breastfeeding the answer may be yes. The ducts to the nipple are often disrupted during this procedure. You still may produce breast milk but since the ducts are disturbed you may not be able to breastfeed exclusively without supplementing.  It is generally recommended that you wait until you are finished having children to have a breast lift, as pregnancy and breast-feeding may have significant and unpredictable effects on the size and shape of your breasts.

Will I lose the sensation to my nipples after a breast lift?

Most patients do not experience nipple sensation loss, however, in a small percentage of cases, patients do experience some or complete loss of nipple sensation.

What Are The Potential Risks With Breast Lifts?

The risks include unacceptable scars, loss of nipple sensation, numbness on breast skin, asymmetry, inability to breast feed, recurrence of breast sagging. I will thoroughly go over all these risks with you at your pre-operative appointment.

Where are the scars?

The scar will run along and around the areola and then follow the contour of the breast to the fold beneath the breast. It takes a full year for the scars to mature and after healing may be difficult to see.

Will smoking effect my healing?

Yes! Even smoking E-Cigarettes can delay your healing when having a breast lift. Smoking causes the skin to heal poorly and the complications associated with smoking are tremendous. Even second hand smoke during the weeks before surgery and after will adversely affect your results. Stopping is a must before and after any operation and I will do random nicotine testing.

Will my breasts hurt?

Generally, there is moderate discomfort for the first week after a breast lift that is relieved with pain medication that I will prescribe for you. The second week after surgery the discomfort is greatly diminished, and by the third week there should be no discomfort.

When will I see you again?

Depending upon the combination of surgeries, you will re-visit the office within 4 days. There will be multiple visits, which are included in your care, to evaluate your progress. I like to keep a eye on your healing and scars for the first six months.

What type of anesthesia is used?

A breast lift is performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________

Does the nipple get removed and replaced?

No, the nipple is not removed. The nipple stays attached to the breast during both breast lift and breast reduction surgery.

How long do I have to wear a sports bra?

After a  breast lift, patients are generally able to switch to a soft, non-underwire bra within a week. There are many non-underwire bras available and it does not have to be expensive. I ask that you do not wear any bra with an underwire for six weeks after your surgery.

When can I drive?

You can drive when you are completely off all pain medications and are healed up enough that you can react quickly in an emergency situation without causing pain or damage to your surgery site.
