Candidates for RADIESSE®

Like other cosmetic dermal fillers, RADIESSE® is intended for patients that are exhibiting unwanted signs of facial aging. Candidates for RADIESSE® typically want to reduce smile lines and marionette lines (deep lines or creases that run from the corners of the mouth down to the chin). RADIESSE® can also be used to augment the nose, cheeks, chin, temples, and jaw, and is often recommended to fill depression-type scars (such as acne scars). This filler is best for mild to moderate signs of facial aging, and can be a great option for patients that are interested in looking younger without undergoing surgery. Candidates for this procedure should be in good overall health and have realistic expectations for the results of their treatment.

What to Expect During Treatment

RADIESSE® is injected beneath the skin using a very thin needle. Performed with a local anesthetic, it is a simple outpatient procedure that takes only about 15 minutes. After the doctor selects the injection point or points, we will determine the correct amount of filler and place it underneath the dermis and subcutis layer of the skin. Results are immediate, with the final effects becoming apparent in about a week. RADIESSE® treatments cause very little discomfort and require no down time.

Benefits and Risks

RADIESSE® affects the area below the skin’s surface to stimulate the production of collagen and tissue regeneration. During the first few months, RADIESSE® works like a cosmetic filler to plump the skin and fill out facial lines. It then stimulates collagen production in the treatment site, resulting in new tissue growth. Gradually, the gel is replaced with the patient’s natural tissue. The process creates results that can last up to a year or more. Since RADIESSE® is formulated from a naturally occurring substance in the body, no allergy testing is required.

Treatment with RADIESSE® has a very low rate of risks and complications. The injectable filler has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and has been safely used on thousands of patients. Some patients may experience minimal discomfort, bruising, or swelling after treatment. The development of nodules have been associated with RADIESSE® when it is injected poorly or used in areas that it was not intended for. For this reason, the greatest risk is linked to allowing unqualified practitioners to administer treatment.
