Breast Augmentation for Asymmetry By Michael A. Devlin, MD on May 14, 2019

Woman with full breastsBreast augmentation is performed to increase breast size and enhance the overall shape of the breasts. What many women do not know is that breast augmentation is a highly customized procedure.

Plastic surgeon Michael A. Devlin can personalize several aspects of breast augmentation to best meet each patient’s unique needs. This means that, in addition to giving women a fuller bust line, breast augmentation can address asymmetry for our Little Rock, AR patients.

What Causes Asymmetry?

Asymmetry is a normal condition. The size, shape, and position of the breasts change throughout a woman’s life, particularly after puberty, pregnancy, breast feeding, and weight loss, along with age. As the body goes through these changes, the breasts may become more asymmetrical in appearance. While most cases of asymmetry are pretty mild, some women experience more significant differences in the size, position, or shape of the breasts.

Correcting Asymmetry

Breast augmentation is a common and effective solution for asymmetry. Prior to undergoing breast augmentation at our Little Rock practice, patients will choose whether she would like a saline or silicone implant. Beyond that, breast implants can be customized by their size, shape, and texture. Dr. Devlin will suggest a type of implant that can most effectively improve symmetry between the two breasts.

Balancing Breast Volume

The most common way to address asymmetry is by placing breast implants that are two different sizes. Dr. Devlin can even out the volume of the breasts by placing a fuller implant in the smaller breast, and vice versa.

If a patient is already satisfied with the size and shape of their larger breast, they may even opt to have just a single implant placed. By placing an implant in just the smaller breast, Dr. Devlin can increase its size so that it matches the fuller breast more closely. However, in this case, differences in the amount of droopiness for each breast may become evident over time.

Balancing Breast Shape

Sometimes it is not just the size of the breasts that are different, but also the shape. By balancing out the volume of the breasts with different sized implants, we can usually give our Little Rock patients the symmetry they desire. However, sometimes Dr. Devlin needs to do more to improve symmetry.

Along with adjusting the size of breast implants, Dr. Devlin can use different shaped implants to create better balance between the shape of the breasts. For instance, Dr. Devlin may place a teardrop-shaped implant in one breast, while using a traditional round implant in the other.
