BOTOX® Cosmetic vs. Dermal Fillers: Which Is Right For You? By Michael A. Devlin, MD on June 22, 2023

Woman with smooth facial skinFacial skin is regularly exposed to sun, wind, and other harsh environmental elements. This, along with the delicacy of facial skin (particularly around the eyes), often results in premature signs of aging. Wrinkles, creases, and collagen loss may develop as early as a person’s 30s. Fortunately, cosmetic treatment addresses signs of aging to revitalize the appearance.

Dermal fillers and BOTOX® Cosmetic minimize wrinkles to smooth the skin. Both treatments are effective, but their applications vary slightly. Individuals in Little Rock, AR, Conway, AR, and Hot Springs, AR, wondering about BOTOX vs. dermal fillers and which is right for them can work with Dr. Michael A. Devlin to personalize a cosmetic treatment plan.

What Is BOTOX?

BOTOX Cosmetic is an injectable treatment that targets facial wrinkles. BOTOX contains a purified version of the botulinum toxin. Dr. Devlin injects BOTOX into facial muscles responsible for dynamic facial wrinkles. The botulinum toxin temporarily paralyzes targeted muscles to inhibit contractions. As a result, facial skin above the treated muscles relaxes and appears smoother and less wrinkled.

BOTOX results are noticeable in as little as 24 to 48 hours, with maximum results being achieved around 10 days after treatment. BOTOX results typically last at least three months and up to six months. BOTOX treatment can be repeated, as necessary, to maintain a youthful appearance.

BOTOX Candidates

BOTOX treatment targets dynamic wrinkles or those that are caused by muscle contractions. BOTOX injections work best on wrinkles at “crease points” or those associated with facial expressions. Candidates for BOTOX include individuals concerned with the following wrinkles:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Frown lines (vertical “11” lines between the eyebrows)
  • Forehead lines

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are another type of cosmetic injectable. Dermal fillers are gel-like products that usually consist of a hyaluronic acid base. Hyaluronic acid is naturally produced by the body to keep the skin supple and reduce lines and wrinkles. As a person ages, hyaluronic acid and collagen are depleted.

Dr. Devlin injects dermal fillers to restore lost facial volume and smooth out moderate facial wrinkles and deep creases. Dermal fillers define facial features and make facial skin look plumper, firmer, and smoother.

Dermal filler results are usually noticeable immediately. Filler results should last at least three to six months after initial treatment, depending on the type of filler used. Some fillers are formulated to last years. As with BOTOX, dermal filler treatment can be repeated, as necessary, to maintain results.

Dermal Filler Candidates

Dermal filler effectively addresses collagen loss and minimizes the appearance of static facial wrinkles or those that are present when the face is at rest. Candidates for dermal fillers include individuals concerned with the following signs of aging:

  • Hollow or sunken cheeks
  • Nasolabial folds (marionette lines)
  • Laugh lines
  • Lip lines
