Laser Hair Removal

Unwanted hair can make you feel self-conscious, but removing it with shaving and waxing is only a temporary fix.

Laser hair removal is a more permanent alternative that can remove your unwanted hair for months or even years.

Devlin Cosmetic Surgery: Michael Devlin, M.D. in Little Rock, AR, can target hair on the face or body with an advanced laser treatment.

The Science Behind

Laser Hair Removal

During laser hair removal, light is absorbed by the pigment in the hair without damaging the surrounding skin. The light is then converted into heat, which damages the hair follicles, causing them to release the hair they were growing and preventing them from growing more.

While one treatment can reduce hair growth, multiple treatments are needed to completely remove unwanted hair. This is because hair grows in cycles. While you're able to treat some hair follicles during an initial appointment, other follicles will enter their growth phase later, meaning multiple sessions are needed to target them all.

We may recommend anywhere from two to six treatments to completely address an area. The number of treatments you need and the amount of time between them will depend on the coarseness of your hair, your skin type, and the area of the body you're treating.

Who Can Benefit From Laser Treatment?

While the best candidates for laser hair removal are people with dark hair and pale skin, people with all skin types and tones can be candidates. Laser technology has come a long way in recent years, and while people with darker skin may have experienced complications in the past, they can now safely experience the benefits of hair removal with lasers.

Dr. Michael Devlin in Little Rock, AR, can laser areas such as your:

  • Upper lip
  • Chin
  • Underarms
  • Arms
  • Back
  • Bikini line
  • Legs

Why Little Rock Loves Dr. Devlin

Laser hair removal requires several appointments to achieve optimal results. As this is not a one-time fix, it is important to choose a provider you can trust. Our patients chose Dr. Devlin because of his:

Award-Winning Status

AY Magazine named Dr. Devlin the "Best Cosmetic Surgeon in Little Rock" for three consecutive years. He earned this great acclaim by being more personal than other providers and consistently achieving outstanding results.

Decades in Practice

Dr. Devlin became a practicing surgeon in 2001. He has spent the more than 20 years since refining his skills and learning new techniques. This allows him to deliver precisely tailored laser hair removal.

The Spectrum laser/IPL system

He Uses the Advanced

Spectrum Laser/IPL System

Dr. Devlin has invested in the best laser hair removal technology. Specifically, he uses the Spectrum Laser/IPL System manufactured by Rohrer Aesthetics. Like all Rohrer Aesthetics products, the Spectrum has received FDA clearance.

The Spectrum is a four-laser device that uses intense pulsed light to remove and reduce hair. This cutting-edge piece of equipment was specifically designed for hair removal. It delivers up to 10 pulses of light per second. It also has built-in contact cooling technology that avoids patient discomfort during treatment.

Professional Technology Vs. At-Home Laser

Unwanted hair can be incredibly frustrating. Unfortunately, some potential patients turn to at-home lasers to avoid paying for professional laser hair removal. In 2023, a scientific study published in the peer-reviewed journal PLoS One compared these two paths.

The study found that home-use lasers resulted in hair reduction of about 46-52%. In comparison, diode lasers (the type of laser used in our Spectrum device) achieved overall hair reduction of 85-88%. As this study shows, the quality of hair removal is significantly higher when the procedure is performed using the best technology.

The study also found that professional laser technology is more effective when performed by skilled providers. Dr. Devlin and his team are experts at using the Spectrum device and are here to meet your removal needs.

Step-by-Step
The Laser Hair Removal Procedure

Laser hair removal provides results that can last for months or years. If your hair does grow back, it's often finer and lighter in color.
Laser hair removal provides results that can last for months or years. If your hair does grow back, it's often finer and lighter in color.

Preparation

In the six weeks prior to your treatment, you should avoid plucking, waxing, and electrolysis so the laser can effectively target your follicles. You should also limit your exposure to the sun as it can tan your skin and lighten your hair, making treatment less effective. Clean and shave the area to be treated within 24 hours of your appointment.

Eye Protection & Anesthetic

During your appointment with us in Little Rock, you will be provided with protective eyewear to shield your eyes from the lasers. A topical anesthetic may be applied to the treatment area to minimize any discomfort, and your technician may shave or trim the area. Your technician will choose settings on the laser device that are optimal for your skin type and tone.

Procedure

Your technician will press the handheld device into your skin. The device emits lasers that pass through your skin and damage only the follicles in the area. They will use this device all over the treatment area. Your laser hair removal procedure can take just a few minutes if you're treating a small area like your upper lip, or over an hour if you're treating a large area like your back or legs.

Repeat Treatments

You can schedule your next treatment in 4-8 weeks. You will continue to receive treatments with us in Little Rock until your hair stops growing.

Laser hair removal can give you the look and confidence you deserve. Our expert team is known for delivering individualized care with results that exceed expectations. To discuss your first laser hair removal appointment, simply call (501) 227-8811 or write to us.

Before You Come In

Dr. Devlin strives to ensure that each of his patients gets the most out of their chosen procedure. This includes providing detailed behavioral guidelines that should be followed prior to any given procedure. When it comes to laser hair removal, he will likely recommend that in the weeks before your appointment, you should :

  • Avoid sun exposure
  • Stop using tanning lotions
  • Cease taking blood thinners like Aspirin
  • Avoid other hair removal methods for a month
  • Trim or shave your hair the day before laser removal

Results

of the Treatment

After just one session, you should notice a 10-25% decrease in hair growth. After each hair removal treatment, your results will become more prominent. Dr. Devlin finds that his typical Little Rock, AR, patient requires just six appointments to achieve their desired results.

Upon finishing their treatment sessions, most patients do not experience hair growth for months to years. If hair does grow back, it tends to be thinner, finer, and lighter in color. After your first round of treatments, annual touch-ups are recommended to maintain your results.

The Price of Hair Removal

Laser hair removal by our Little Rock team is a long-term solution that can save you money over the years. Once you take into account the amount of money you would otherwise spend on razors, shaving cream, wax, and trips to the salon, the price of laser hair removal can be a sound investment. We accept several financing options to help patients budget for the cost of treatment.
