Liposuction

Some people, no matter how much they diet or how hard they exercise, struggle with stubborn fat that just won't go away.

Liposuction is an immensely popular plastic surgery that can eliminate excess fat in many body parts and attractively contour the body.

Dr. Michael Devlin in Little Rock, AR, has performed thousands of liposuctions since the 1990s, consistently achieving outstanding results.

What Exactly Is Liposuction?

Liposuction is an incredibly popular plastic surgery that can remove up to 10 pounds of fat cells from the body. This can result in attractive body contouring and an important confidence boost.

During liposuction surgery, Dr. Michael Devlin makes small incisions in targeted areas. He then inserts a thin tube, known as a cannula, which he uses to gently suction excess fat cells from your body.

Liposuction can be performed for both men and women. Patients turn to liposuction when stubborn fat cells refuse to go away despite healthy exercise and eating habits.

Liposuction Is Not a Weight Loss Solution

/

Our Little Rock plastic surgery office prides itself on being straightforward with patients. It is important that you know liposuction is not a comprehensive surgical weight loss solution. It is a body contouring procedure that removes fat, but it should only be performed for patients who are within 30 pounds of their ideal weight.

Liposuction Can Improve Many Areas of the Body

Once an individual has undergone liposuction, they will enjoy a slimmer, tighter-looking figure. Unlike a tummy tuck, which focuses solely on the abdominal region, liposuction can be applied nearly anywhere on the body.

The most common areas for liposuction are:

  • Stomach
  • Waist
  • Arms
  • Thighs
  • Buttocks
  • Hips
  • Bra line
  • Chin and neckline

Liposuction can remove weight in many body parts in one procedure. It can also be performed for highly specific reasons, as seen below.

This 36-year-old Arkansas man came to our Little Rock practice because he was displeased with the shape and appearance of his chin. Dr. Devlin explained exactly how he could resolve these issues. Our cosmetic surgeon performed chin liposuction with a chin implant to achieve the transformation seen above.

The Most Popular Cosmetic Plastic Surgery on Earth

In 2023, The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery published its Global Survey. It showed that over 2.2 million liposuction procedures were performed worldwide. This is the third year in a row that liposuction has been the most commonly performed procedure, passing even breast augmentation, abdominoplasty, and rhinoplasty.

Liposuction Candidacy

Dr. Michael Devlin explains liposuction candidacy and related misconceptions. Liposuction is not a weight loss treatment. Instead, it is intended to help patients who are near their ideal weight enhance their contours by removing about five liters of excess fatty tissue.

Determining Liposuction Candidacy

We are here to help men and women throughout Little Rock, Conway, and Hot Springs, AR, obtain the bodies they want. That being said, we make sure each patient is a good candidate for a specific surgery before commencing treatment. When it comes to liposuction candidacy, Dr. Devlin will assess your:

Current Body

Liposuction candidates should be within 30 pounds of their ideal weight. They should also have sufficient skin elasticity, which helps avoid looseness and wrinkles after surgery.

Medical History

Several health issues can make liposuction a poor choice. These include a weak immune system, diabetes, heart disease, or deep vein thrombosis.

Smoking Habits

An ideal liposuction candidate does not use nicotine of any kind. This is because nicotine restricts blood flow, increasing the difficulty of surgery and impeding a healthy recovery.

Pregnancy Status

Liposuction is not recommended for pregnant women, those who are nursing, or those planning a pregnancy. This is because pregnancy can undo the results of liposuction.

The Liposuction Timeline

When you receive liposuction from Dr. Devlin, you can expect him to complete the following surgical steps:

A single liposuction surgery can transform your body for years.
A single liposuction surgery can transform your body for years.

Detailed Design

Dr. Devlin meticulously marks the areas of your body that will undergo fat removal. This pinpoint planning allows him to complete surgery with precision.

Soothing Anesthesia

Anesthesia is used to numb you from pain and relax your body, making it easier for our surgeon to operate effectively. General anesthesia is typically used, however, liposuction can sometimes be completed with only the use of local anesthesia.

Targeted Injections

Dr. Devlin injects the previously marked areas with a special solution that causes the targeted fat to both firm and swell. This makes it easier to remove.

Precise Incisions

After your anesthesia has taken full effect, Dr. Devlin makes small, careful incisions in the marked areas.

Fat Elimination

Dr. Devlin then inserts the cannula through the incisions. He uses the cannula to break up unwanted fat cells before gently suctioning them out of your body.

Finishing Up

Our surgeon places compression garments on the suctioned areas. This helps prevent skin from becoming loose, encourages healing, reduces swelling and bruising, and more.

Liposuction Recovery

Liposuction is performed on an outpatient basis. This means you can go home to rest and recover the same day that you receive your surgery. Dr. Devlin will provide you with detailed instructions to expedite your recovery and help you get the most out of your results. These instructions include:

Wear Your Compression Garments

You should wear the special compression garment that Dr. Devlin gives you for a full 10 days. Doing so helps counteract many potential side effects, including swelling. It also helps your skin stay taut to your body and adhere to your new contours.

Control Inflammation With Medication

Inflammation and some minor bleeding at the incision sites are normal. It is important to control this inflammation with cool compresses and anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen. Doing so helps hasten recovery and make it more comfortable.

Rest and Relax

Bruising, pain, and swelling should lessen each day. A typical patient can return to a desk job within a day or two of surgery. However, it is important to relax outside of work. Avoid any strenuous physical exertion for the first week. At the same time, it is important to take light walks to help prevent the formation of blood clots.

Attend Follow-Up Visits

Dr. Devlin will schedule follow-up visits so he can monitor your recovery. You can expect to see him approximately one week after the operation. At that appointment, he can let you know if you will be able to return to your usual daily routine within another week or two. Further follow-ups will be scheduled, all of which are covered by your liposuction payment.

Liposuction May Also

Offer Some Health Benefits

Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that should not be relied on for weight loss or total health improvement. That being said, a scientific review of 12 large-volume liposuction studies showed the procedure may offer some health benefits. Notably, liposuction may have a positive impact on patients' metabolic balance, insulin resistance, and cardiovascular risk factors.

Remember that liposuction is not a replacement for diet and exercise, and it’s not a cure-all for preventing weight gain. You can still gain weight, even after receiving liposuction, if you fail to exercise and eat a balanced diet. Additional weight gain can offset liposuction's potential health benefits.

FAQ About Liposuction

Can liposuction treat cellulite?

While liposuction in Little Rock, AR, can remove stubborn fat deposits and sculpt different areas all over your body, it is not recommended for the treatment of cellulite. Cellulite is caused by fibrous bands that pull on the skin and cause dimpling. Excess fat is not the cause.

What type of liposuction do you perform?

Our cosmetic surgeon serving Little Rock, Conway, and Hot Springs performs tumescent liposuction. This type of liposuction involves injecting a solution of local anesthesia and epinephrine into the treatment site to make the fat cells swell and become firm, making them easier to remove with the cannula. The solution also shrinks blood vessels to make the procedure safer and more comfortable for patients.

Will I have scars?

Yes, but they'll be small and discreet. Dr. Devlin always tries to make incisions in inconspicuous areas like creases of the body or areas that are easily covered by clothing. You can also take measures to fade your scars after your surgery, like using scar creams and protecting your scars from the sun.

What's the difference between liposuction and a tummy tuck?

When you think of liposuction, you may think of slimming the midsection. However, liposuction can be used to remove fat from all over the body. On the other hand, a tummy tuck uses liposuction and excision techniques to remove fat and excess skin from the midsection. A tummy tuck can also repair separated abdominal muscles. If you have stretched skin due to pregnancy or weight loss, a tummy tuck with optional liposuction may be able to give you a more comprehensive result than lipo alone.

Does recovery hurt?

You can expect some swelling and soreness as you recover, but many patients report the discomfort is easily managed with pain medication and doesn't keep them from performing many of their daily activities. If it does, it's usually only for a few days. Our cosmetic surgeon will tell you what to expect during your consultation.

“Dr. Devlin and his staff are just the best! They are always so kind and really listen to my concerns. Dr. Devlin answers questions honestly to deliver accurate expectations while still meeting my expectations above and beyond!” Lacey K., 5-Star Review
